Proven hints and tricks on how to get rid of stains

Below we list the most frequent problem stains, together with how to remove them. Please note that each stain-removal hint only applies to the material specified for it, not to anything else at all.

B

Ball-point pen ink:
dissolve with alcohol, ox-gall soap or eau de cologne, wash out, treat with peroxide (obtainable from pharmacies) if necessary.

Beer:
soak in sparkling mineral water, then wash.

Blueberries:
soak in sour milk, rinse, then wash.

Blood:
Fresh stains – rub salt into the stain, wash out in cold salt water.

Dried stains – soak in detergent at 30° C for 12 hours, then rinse and wash.

Butter:
apply mild liquid detergent, then wash out  in warm water.

Chewing gum:
chill in the refrigerator for a while, then carefully scrape it off with a clean knife, dab with turpentine, then wash.

Cocoa:
wash out with soap in lukewarm water.

Chocolate:
wash out with mild detergent in lukewarm water.
• Washable wool • cotton • linen • viscose • acetate

Coffee:
dissolve with warm water or in glycerine (obtainable from pharmacies).

Black coffee – dissolve in lukewarm water.

Cola:
fresh stains – normal wash. Dried stains – first soak in a mild detergent, then wash.

Stains in wool – wet with mineral water, then wash.

Egg yolk:
liberally sprinkle with salt, leave to dry, brush out, dab with cold water, then wash.

Egg white:
wash out with cold water, then wash.

F

Fat / sauce:
treat with a mild liquid detergent, then wash. Fresh stains – sprinkle with potato flour, leave for several hours to take effect, then brush out.

Fruit juice:
immediately wash out with cold water, then wash as normal.

Grass:
first dab with spirit or alcohol, then wash.

H

Hair dye:
dissolve in alcohol, then wash.

I

Ice cream:
wash out with lukewarm water.

Ink:
 dissolve with turpentine or eau de cologne, then wash. Alternatively soak in milk, then wash.

Jam:
dissolve in lukewarm water, then wash.

L

Liqueur:
wash out with lukewarm water.
• Washable silk • washable wool • cotton • linen • viscose

Lipstick:
dab with alcohol or spirit, then wash.

M

Make-up:
dab with alcohol or face-lotion.
• Washable wool • cotton • linen

Mayonnaise:
carefully remove with the blunt edge of a clean knife, apply mild liquid detergent, then wash out with lukewarm water.

Milk:
wash at 30° C. In stubborn cases, treat with diluted liquid ammonia (obtainable from pharmacies).

Mustard:
dissolve in lukewarm water, then wash.

P

Paint: 
rub soap in, then wash. This only applies to paint that is soluble in water.

Perfume:
dab with alcohol, then wash with mild liquid detergent.

R

Red berries:
rub in detergent paste, give it time to take effect, then wash.
• Cotton • linen • viscose

Resin:
dissolve with turpentine, then wash.
• Cotton • linen

Red wine:
either wash out immediately, or spread with a thick layer of salt and then wash.
As an alternative. first dab with diluted  citric acid.

Shoe cream:
immediately dissolve with turpentine, then wash.
• White cotton • white linen

Soot:
remove loose soot with a vacuum cleaner, dab with turpentine, then wash.

Sugar:
rinse with lukewarm water, then wash.
• Washable wool • cotton • linen • viscose

Sweat:
add two dessert-spoonfuls of salt to the wash cycle.

Silk and wool: dry-clean only.

Tar:
rub with butter, then treat with turpentine.

Tea:
dissolve with glycerine (obtainable from pharmacies), then wash.

Tomato sauce:
dissolve with mild liquid detergent, then wash.
• Washable wool • cotton • linen • viscose

V

Vegetables:
first treat with detergent paste or mild detergent, then wash.
• Cotton • linen

W

Wax:
carefully remove large droplets, then place a paper tissue or kitchen towel on top of the stain and use the tip of a warm iron to melt the wax so that it is absorbed by the paper. Keep replacing the paper. Dab any remaining discoloration with turpentine or eau de cologne.
